Our Commitments

We recognise that:

  • Women face disadvantage and discrimination due to their gender;
  • Attitudes and actions based on the belief that one gender is superior to another are known as sexism;
  • Both men and women can be subjected to sexism, it is generally accepted that women face the greatest level of sexism. This means that women are subjects of negative stereotyping, attitudes, treated as inferiors and can be denied the same quality of life as men;
  • It can also mean they face harassment, hatred and violence;
  • We also recognise that women can face other forms of discrimination and disadvantage due to their marital status, family circumstances, caring responsibilities;
  • Although women are referred to as a 'minority group', they actually form the majority of the population;
  • We are committed to addressing the needs of both women and men.

 We will:

  • Challenge sexism;
  • Promote positive images of women and challenge attitudes that patronise or discriminate against women;
  • Support campaigns and activities for achieving full equality for women;
  • Work with others to make Newcastle a safe place for women to live, work, study and spend their leisure time;
  • Be aware that many women find language like 'pet', 'lasses' and 'ladies' unacceptable to them. If they ask you not to use this language, please stop and apologise for any offence called;
  • Remember what may be acceptable to us is not necessarily acceptable to everyone else.
